Hi, I’m Ruby Thorn, the home cook behind The Tender Mess—and I’m so glad you’ve found your way here.

This blog was born not out of perfection, but out of a hundred imperfect meals. Burnt toast. Runny eggs. Over-salted soup.

And eventually – fluffy biscuits that rose just right, a soup that tasted like home, and cookies that disappeared before they cooled.

I named this space The Tender Mess because that’s exactly what cooking has always been for me: a little messy, a little unpredictable, but always filled with heart.

🍽 A Food Blog for Real Life

This isn’t a blog about food that looks perfect on Instagram or that requires five kitchen gadgets and a trip to three grocery stores.

It’s about:

  • Recipes that come together even when your day didn’t
  • Meals that comfort, nourish, and don’t judge you
  • Flavours that feel familiar but still surprise you
  • Slow Sundays, weeknight scrambles, and everything in between

Whether you’re a beginner figuring out how to boil pasta or someone who finds peace in the rhythm of chopping onions, you’re welcome here.

🌱 My Food Philosophy

I believe food should feel like a warm hug, not a performance.

That’s why you’ll find a mix of:

  • Comfort food recipes with simple, affordable ingredients
  • Seasonal dishes that let fresh produce shine
  • One-pot meals, hearty soups, and no-fuss desserts
  • Creative ideas for when you’re out of ideas
  • And the occasional reminder that you’re doing just fine

In my kitchen, there’s room for mistakes, substitutions, and second tries. That’s what makes the food feel alive.

🍳 My Story: From Chaos to Calm (Kind Of)

I grew up in a loud, loving home in North Carolina where food was the one thing that brought everyone to the same table—no matter what else was going on. We didn’t measure spices, and recipes were more “guideline” than rule. It wasn’t tidy, but it was real.

As an adult, I carried that same spirit into my own kitchen. I’ve never been the kind of cook who lays everything out in perfect bowls. I’m the kind who gets flour on her shirt, changes the playlist three times, and eats standing up with the fridge door open.

But somewhere in the mess, I found meaning. Cooking became therapy. It became my way to slow down, create beauty, and share comfort—whether I’m making a skillet meal for one or Sunday dinner for six.

And eventually, I decided to share that joy—and the messiness that comes with it—with the world.

💡 Why I Started The Tender Mess

I started this blog for people like me:

  • People who crave connection through food
  • People who don’t always follow the rules in the kitchen
  • People who cook with heart more than precision

I wanted a space where it was okay to forget the garnish, burn the first batch, or change your mind halfway through. Because food is forgiving. And so should we be.

This blog isn’t about making every meal perfect—it’s about making every meal yours.

Thanks for being here.
Here’s to the meals that don’t go as planned. To cracked plates, slightly burnt edges, and still going back for seconds.

Here’s to the tender mess.
